Wine is delicious. I love the smell of it, the look of it and, of course, the taste of it. Heck, it’s the reason I met my fella! But, now I can be grateful that it’s may also keep my skin healthy.
UV rays can cause skin cancers, make you look older or just give you a plain and painful sunburn! Not sure where they came up with the idea, but the University of Barcelona and the Spanish National Research Council looked at the chemical reaction in the skin when hit by UV rays from the sun and found that flavonoids found in wine (particularly Cabernets, Petite Syrahs and Pinot Noirs) act as shields for cells at risk of breaking down from UV exposure. Translated from scientific jargon, there’s something in wine that creates a barrier against the damaging UV rays!
Now, time for the sad part: Drinking the wine isn’t going to help you.
The only way drinking wine will help prevent a sunburn is if it keeps you inside a restaurant or sitting under an awning. And, of course, drinking too much wine will lead to dehydration which can actually help you burn and it can turn your face red too!
But, there are skin care companies are all over this, trying to pinpoint that magic ingredient in the wine, so we’ll probably be seeing a new line of moisturizers that will sound and smell amazing. A Cabernet Sauvignon night cream anyone?
There are still other scientific reasons that it’s smart to keep drinking the vino…in moderation:
- Wine might prevent memory loss and dementia and improves cognitive functioning.
- Wine prevents weight gain.
- Red wine reduces bad cholesterol build-up in the blood-vessels and increases good cholesterol.
- Wine reduces cell damage and protects from diabetes, stomach ulcers and even some cancers.
I do have to stress the moderation though. Any and all health benefits are totally reversed if you drink too much! Pity.
