I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need To Be Nicer

Aren’t Record of the Year & Album of the Year the same thing?

The Grammys. An award ceremony where it feels like they give out the exact same award over and over again all night. There’s Record Of The Year, but also Album Of The Year. What the heck is the difference? Since I actually should probably know this, I finally got around to looking it up!

Record of the Year is actually for just one track, or single, from an album. This award goes to the performing artist and the producer, recording engineer, and/or mixer for that song.

Album of the Year is for an entire album, and the award is presented to the artist, producer, and recording engineer for that album.

So, at the Grammys, “record” means one song and “album” means, well, the album; the whole collection of songs. This now leads to a new question: what the heck’s the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year?

It’s all a matter of who gets the award.

Record of the Year, which we just learned is actually for just one track, goes to the performer and the producer of that single.

Song of the Year, which is also for just one track, goes to the songwriter, not the performer. Sometimes, the performer wrote their own song so they can be the one receiving both awards, but it’s a way of giving whoever deserves it the credit for actually coming up with the song in the first place!

So, now I know. And…
